ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

After my career as an airbrush illustrator for the advertising industry and wanting to diversify, I entered into the realm of Tonal Impressionism. My teacher at that time was Graham Inson, whose teacher was Max Meldrum who also taught Clarice Beckett. I guess that’s where my passion for ‘still life’ started. I continued painting still life but to a more highly finished level which meant it would take much longer to execute a painting. Therefore I would put the subject matter together and sketch from various angles and outline it on the canvas. As my paintings are highly finished it means I sometimes have to paint longer hours – into the night if need be.

About Alexander Lavroff

Alex Lavroff’s stylist artistic history dates back to his youth in exotic Egypt legendary for its archival past. Alexander engrossed himself in the extraordinariness of his environment until he was twelve years of age and at this time he was afforded the opportunity to take life classes with an Italian Master.

Alex’s formal art education was born from the famous Sydney Technical Art Collage at Darlinghurst; and later at the Royal Art Society at North Sydney where he would obtain merit with his portraitures; and then training with Graham Inson from the Max Meldrum School in tonal impressionism.

His career stems from time working as an acknowledged Illustrator for the advertising industry, specialising in airbrushed photo-realistic illustrations. During this time Alexander managed a large Neutral Bay studio where he organised and represented other Illustrators.

After working in advertising, Alex turned his attention to making fine art. In recent years he was a been a finalist in several prizes, as well as winning the prestigious Mosman Art Prize with Margaret Olley as the judge in 2009. He has also exhibited with Michael Commerford Gallery, Sara Roney Gallery and Mary Place Gallery in Paddington, and has been represented by OzArt in the U.S.
